Note #1
From The Editor: For All of our dedicated and devoted high school football fans, let’s call it “half-time” on the field of play as we pause for the cause and reflect on how the season is going for all of our teams. Our Week #6 “Round-Up” is now in the books and several of our covered teams are definitely in the running for a league title, while playoff seeding is still a goal for others. Many of the remaining games are “key” and will determine the expected outcomes for all coaches, players, teams, schools, student-bodies, alumni, and their supportive communities. Our thoughts and prayers are with all! Last note on this posting….we’re including the Garfield and Cathedral team photo galleries from this past week for your viewing appreciation.
Brief Team Notes From The Editor:
Garfield: Head Coach Lorenzo Hernandez’s formula for success is once again playing out true to form. This is based on his tested philosophy of playing a tough preseason schedule and then focusing on winning the coveted Eastern League title as he has done so many times in the past. The outlook is looking good for a return trip to the L.A. City Section’s Division-I playoffs with a 1st Round “home field” seeding just as it was in 2014. The “Bulldogs” now have a three-game win streak and are (2-0) in League play. They could very well go undefeated for the rest of their schedule.
Cathedral: Head Coach Kevin Pearson once again has his “Phantoms” poised for a strong run at winning the Angelus League title. Currently undefeated in the pre-season, he prepares his team for the League opener against La Salle on “Homecoming” Night, 2015. Should be another high-scoring affair as the Phantoms offensive machine just keeps getting better and better, and nearly impossible to stop. The 1-2 “KO” punch of QB/Andrew Tovar (1,380 total yds to date) to his WR/Renard Bell (540 total yds to date) have been unstoppable.
South Gate: Head Coach José Casagran always prepares his “Rams” to get better with each new week and opponent of the season. After game five, he has posted an overall (4-1) record and very importantly, he and the team are (1-0) in the Eastern League. Opposing teams have much to be concerned about whenever they go up against the Rams’ high-octane offense and tightfisted defense. However, South Gate has its work cut out when they will soon face up with the likes of Southeast, Roosevelt, and Garfield as the League winds down.
Salesian: The “Mustangs” have a winning pre-season record at (3-2), but everything now changes when they take on St. Francis in their Angeleus League opener this Friday. Replacing several “key” players due to graduation has been the biggest adjustment they’ve faced this year. But, the proud and determined Mustangs are always looking for ways to improve and get better, and this should be one of those games that will set the tone for the remainder of their season, and hopefully, a return to the playoffs.
Torres: The “Toros” have struggled all season long, and they most likely will face their second consecutive year of a victories draught. Last year, they were (0-10) and currently, they are winless in pre-season (0-4) and in Northern Laegue play (0-1). However, with a new coach coming in, and the addition of many new players to the team, perhaps this is one of those seasons that must “happen” in order to bring about bigger and better program changes in the future. Hang in there Toros fans!
