By Rico Cabrera, Sr. Nov 14, 2015
 friday footballELASS Logo #2ANote #1 From The Editor:  Our Week #12 “Round-Up”  is all about the Playoffs and we bring you our posting of Round 1, 2015.  The results are in and three of our teams, two of our covered CIF teams, Bishop Amat, and Cathedral,  plus our one remaining  L.A. City Schools team, Garfield  are all moving on. Bishop Amat easily dominated and doubled up the score on Norco  at home while Cathedral  dispatched Crescenta Valley  in a business-like fashion, also in a home game environment.  Garfield  carved out a narrow, but decisive victory over El Camino Real  and once again has a home game, this time a quarterfinal against Crenshaw.  Another  huge Congrats! to ALL  Teams, Coaches, Student-Bodies and Fans!!
About This Posting’s Photo Gallery: This posting will feature the Photo Galleries from the Cathedral  vs. Crescenta Valley  1st round game and the South Gate  vs. San Pedro  1st round playoff game as well.
Note #2 From the Editor:  To continue our commemoration of Veterans Day 2015,  we are expanding it to cover all of November  as well as during the Christmas Holiday  season. All photo galleries will contain graphic poster of Veterans Day and thier appropriate messages. We firmly stand with our valiant  Chicano/Latino  servicemen and women veterans and salute them with an unwavering and tremendously proud “Thanks”  for having performed their duties with strength, courage, and honor to their fullest efforts possible. We commend you and appreciate you always!! If you are one of our followers who is a “Wounded Warrior,”  with the Good Lord’s Blessings, may you continue to heal, rehabilitate, and re-connect with your families, friends, mentors, and support groups. <L.A. City Schools>
Eastern League:
Garfield “Bulldogs” –  Huge congrats to the Eastern League Champions who had their “hands full” against their first round opponent, #14 seed El Camino Real. In what could best be described as a defensive struggle for most of the game, the Bulldogs put up enough points by halftime, 14 and then called out the defensive storm troops for a shut out in the 2nd half. The result, a narrow but solid win. Next, the Crenshaw “Cougars” come in to East L.A.’s famous “Dog House!” Our game-day advice, try to get there early since this may be a full house.
South Gate “Rams” – The 90280 zip code was well represented this season by Coach Casagran and his Rams. In this 1st round playoff match-up, they jumped out an early lead against San Pedro and the confidence factor was there. But eventually, due to several “key” player injuries, the offesnse was shut down and hence, the Pirates showed their tradiitonal dominance in the playoffs by closing out the South Gate season with a convincing win. Division 1 in the CiF/L.A. City Schools is a very tough road to successfully navigate.
Northern League:
 Wilson “Mighty Mules” – Oh, but if the Special Teams had come through in a critical and timely manner. That was the significant difference in this game as the Mules fell short by a single point of at least an overtime period to determine the eventual winner. Nonetheless,  the 2015 season was an exceptional one for the “Mighty Mules” as they turned their program around and restored their prominence in the Northern League. Coach Martinez has already started preparing another outstanding season next year.
Lincoln “Tigers” –  The low seed that the “Tigers” were given made it an even harder path to the winners circle due to the road game against #4 seed, Canoga Park. But, the Tigers gave it all they had and performed valiantly. However, in the final game analysis, Canoga was the stonger on defnese with 5.0 sacks and their offensive line created lots of running space for their backs as they piled up 317 rushing yards. Coach Carrillo is now preparing for 2016 and should return for another run at the title.
<CIF Southern Section>
Bishop Amat “Lancers” –  Congrats on win #1 in the PAC-5 Division playoffs, The Lancers gave their fans a lot to cheer for last Friday as they literally destroyed their visiting opponent, Norco. And per the observation of our photo-journalist, Vince Quiñones, it was a very physical game that was very close until midway through the 2nd quarter. Norco had a 16-0 lead at one point and then Amat came storming back. Norco’s QB Victor Viramontes was unbelievable, even in a losing effort. He is currently being recruited by the Michigan “Wolverines.” We’ll keep our eye on him. The Lancers now  play undefeated Oaks Christian (11-0), but they’ll certainly be ready to protect their house in a well-deserved home game. The game will be televised on Fox Sports West cable.Don’t miss it if you are a big fan of high school football.
Cathedral “Phantoms” – Congrats!! to the Phantoms on protecting their house “big time”  against Crescenta Valley. The game was in total Phantom control by halftime when the score was 22-13, Phantoms. After the break, the full team “game face”  was on display via a stingy defense, an always dangerous offense, especially the “air attack” game, and once agian, Coach Pearson’s Special Teams gained more vauable playoff experience. The end result, a dynamic and super solid win. Next it’s on to Downey  for Round #2 in the quarterfinals.
