Note #1 From The Editor: Greetings to All of our high school football fans, young, old, and in between. We’ve finally hit the double digit week for our “Weekly Round-Up.” The tenth week is now officially in the books and there’s just one more week of the regular season remaining. The second season is about to begin shortly! Let there be no doubt that (8) of our (9) covered teams are in contention for a run at the Championship in their respective CIF Divisions. Our motto right now at EastLASportsScene.Com is, “Let’s get fired up and ready to go!!”
Note #2 From The Editor: This posting’s photo gallery includes last week’s coverage of the Cathedral “Phantoms” vs. the Harvard-Westlake “Wolverines“ as shot by Daniel Barcenas. And please also take a moment to check out the nice graphic posters highlighting the Eastern league Championship Game on Friday between Garfield and South Gate. It should be a fantastic “Fireworks” show. Both teams are undefeated at 5-0 and have high-octane offenses. As the old saying goes…“to the victors go the spoils.” Hope you can get out to Garfield and support your team and our young student-atheltes in action under those bright “Friday Night Lights.”
Playoff Predictions; The final week will be the most critical and exciting for the Eastern League championship, since Garfield and South Gate are both undefeated. Both teams will advance to the playoffs. However, the winner should earn a top seed with home field advantage in the L.A. City Schools Division-1 tournament. In the Northern league, Wilson and Lincoln are tied for 2nd place with 4-1 records. They will both need a win to vie for good seeds in the Division-3 (Wilson) and Division-2 (Lincoln) tournaments. Wilson faces off with undefeated Eagle Rock in the final league game. An Eagle Rock win clinches the title and a trip to the Division-1 tournament. A win for Wilson creates a tie with possibilities of the championship going to the Mighty Mules due to the “head-to-head” victory. Lincoln must close out with a decisive win over Marshall to assure themselves of a decent playoff seed. Roosevelt will need to defeat South East convincingly and then hope for some help from the rest of the pack for playoff consideration.
In the CIF Southern Section playoff scheme, Bishop Amat closes out the Mission League at Loyola and will definitely be in the playoffs, while Angelus League member schools, Cathedral, is also in, and Salesian may have to rely on the selection committee to see if they are granted an “At-Large” playoff spot. <Brief Playoff Forecast By Team> Rico Cabrera, Sr./Editor, EastLASportsScene.Com
<L.A. City Schools>
Eastern League:
Garfield “Bulldogs” – Took care of business in rivalry game vs. Roosevelt and remain undefeated in Eastern League. Biggest test comes this Friday vs. South Gate for undisputed League Championship.
South Gate “Rams” – Destroying opponents on a weekly basis. “Rams” continue to light up scoreboard with third 50+ game in last four games. A huge “Clash of the Titans” vs. Garfield comes this Friday. Playoff spot secured.
Roosevelt “Rough Riders” – Could be on the Bubble due to Garfield loss in League play. Need to win final game and get some help from other members for probable playoff bid.
Northern League:
Wilson “Mighty Mules” – Need to finish League play with a flourish and lobby for high seed due to overall and Northern League records. Staying healthy and injury-free will be a playoff pre-requisite to advance in D-3 bracket.
Lincoln “Tigers” – One down, and one more to go. All about improving the league record now with a convincing “close-out” win. Keep in mind the degree of difficulty due to their D-2 placement.
Torres “Toros” – Looking to rebuild for next season. Trying several players at new positions to finish season.
<CIF Southern Section>
Bishop Amat “Lancers” – Playoff picture is solid. A high playoff seeding is at stake since “Lancers” are tied for 2nd place with Loyola. Opponent is also in the running for a bid.
Cathedral “Phantoms” – Playoffs are definitely on their horizon. Need to finish Angelus League with big win for the attractive and highly sought upper seeding spot.
Salesian “Mustangs” – Playoffs are still probable due to League record. May need help from other teams to get in. Could be a “dark horse” entry if selected.
