Note From The Editor: Week #1 was a highly important, yet very successful one for Torres HS Head Coach, Charles Burnley, and his charges from the 2-0, Torres “Toros.” They took the 10 Frwy. to the 101 Frwy. from East L.A. to Hollywood and entered the opponent’s campus with only one thought on their minds…”we’ve got to go back home with a win over Hollywood!” With this mindset they took the field led by their All-American candidate, Tiquan Gilmore (C). His band of brothers included, #42 Jalen Williams, #9 Mario Gonzalez, #11, Antonio Greer, #1 Efrin Vargas, #3 Brandon Rivas, #54 Deonte Leon, #74 Jesse Hernandez, #2 Andrew Morales, #6 Frank Urzua, #21 Kenny Torres, #5 Jorge Zepeda, (C),#59 Ish Arciga, (C), #63 Erik Avitia, #76 Sebastian Mayorga, #75 Steve Ledesma, #78 Chris Hernandez, and #80 Chris Leon (C), just to name many of the starters.
According to Head Coach Burnley, who is looking for his team chemistry to start jelling, “eventhough we were victorious on the road, we still were effected by several factors, one was the heat wave which still managed to produce some rain and humidity. We also saw several key players plagued with cramps during the game.” He also added that “these conditions certainly contributed to our playing a bit sloppy at times. But we still used our full squad of players to step up and take care of business. We really wanted to get this win and remove last season’s playoff loss from our minds.”

Both scores coming back-to-back in the 1st quarter. Cornerback Mario Gonzalez/JR. receipted for his second INT of the season. On special teams excellence, Kenny Torres/SR. handled all the PAT kicks and Frank Urzua/JR. continues to master his “twister-tornado“ kick-offs.
The Toros return home next Friday, 9/8 for a showdown with the Belmont “Sentinels” in another non-conference game. Kick-off is at 7 pm. Don’t be too late as the stands are starting to become full every time the Toros take their home field.
