Sylmar “Spartans” (41) Roosevelt “Rough Riders” (20) Recap: The Mighty “Riders” of Roosevelt fell to the relentless assault by the Spartans, in this early season non-conference match-up. The Riders had problems containing the potent offense that Sylmar Head Coach, John Brazil implemented. Although the halftime score favored Sylmar by (14-0), the Riders could score only once in the 3rd quarter & twice in the 4th. Offensive player game highlights were attributed to: Sammy Hernandez (Sr)/QB/2 TD passes on 14-21 for 179 yds/rushed 26-165 yds/1 TD; Adam Martinez (So)/WR/2 catches for 70 yds/1 TD; & Mario Ramirez (Sr)/WR/6 grabs for 54 yds/1 TD. Edison “Chargers” (35) Garfield “Bulldogs” (6) Recap: The Bulldogs hosted the powerful CIF/SS “Chargers” from Huntington Beach on a very warm and late summer night in East L.A. After a (14-0) 1st half that favored the visitors, the Bulldogs never generated a sustained offense until 3 minutes remained in the game, when Cleo Session, Jr. (Sr)/WR-S/ran it in for a 1 yd. score. Other player stats: Frankli Robles (Sr)/FB/8 carries for 50 yds. Tristen Chavarria (Jr)/DE/2 sacks & 10 tackles. Monroe “Vikings” (45) Torres “Toros” (6) Recap: The “Toros” were defeated by the visiting Vikings, based in North Hills section of the San Fernando Valley. This team was ready to go from the opening kick-off and sustained much of their firepower though out this non-conference game. Several Toro bright spots focused on Gabriel Alas, (Sr)/DE and his all-around D-line play; Jose Munive (Sr) RB-LB, credited with 12 tackles; and Erik Sanchez (Sr)/RB, who rushed for 75 yds. Santee “Falcons” (50) Wilson “Mighty Mules” (6) Recap: The Mules traveled to the South East L.A. confines of the Santee “Falcons” for this non-conference tilt. The Mules were attacked quickly and repeatedly in this huge loss. Coach Martinez’s troops couldn’t get untracked and were down by (30-0) at the end of the 1st half. Player mentions from Coach Martinez signal out A.J. Wright (Sr)/QB/on offense and Jose Caiza (Jr)/DL/who stepped in for an injured starter. Huntington Park “Spartans” (35) Lincoln “Tigers” (20) Recap: Coach Alberto Carrillo and his Tigers made the trip to Huntington Park and encountered a very angry “Spartan” who was lying in ambush for them on this Friday night. The halftime score read 21-6 in favor of HP. The Spartans continued their domination of the Tigers in the 2nd half for a convincing non-conference win. Lincoln highlights go to: Dakota Ridegway (Sr)/WR/7 catches for 55 yds; Justin Garcia (Sr)/SS/9 tackles/1 fumble recovery; and Jerry Ochoa (Sr)/CB-LB/8 tackles/1 fumble recovery. South Gate “Rams” (48) University “Wildcats” (14) Recap: The Rams could hardly wait for their fans to be seated comfortably before they struck for a TD via Lavell Thompson’s 9 yd. run to open the game’s scoring. From then on, Coach Casagran used many players in this one-sided home opening victory. 1st half highlights featured Antonio Washington/(Sr)/WR-CB-FS/1 TD run of 40 yds; Andrew Torro (Sr)/QB/1 rushing & 1 passing TD; James Shaw III (Jr)/WR-CB/1 TD on a 78 yd. run & 1 TD on 21 yd. pass from Torro. The 2nd half belonged to new players like Miguel Guerra (Jr)/QB who threw for 2 TDs in the 3rd quarter, both to Antonio Washington/WR. Look out for the Rams, they mean serious business! Cathedral “Phantoms” (12) Pasadena Muir “Mustangs” (7) Recap: The Phantoms traveled a short distance up the 110 Frwy to Pasadena and Muir High. This was a very evenly-matched game, with the halfime score of 7-6 favoring the home team. Both squads were well-prepared and eager to rise to any obstacle in their way. The 3rd quarter was a (0-0) stand-off, but in the 4th quarter, the Phantoms scored on a 50 yd. “Bomb” from Andrew Tovar to Aaron Moore, with only 5 minutes left in the game. This TD moved the score to 12-7, and it was just enough to win. Saluted with playing an outstanding game were: Simi Moala (Sr)/TE-DE-LS; Aaron Moore (Jr)/WR-LB; Moli Tai, (Sr)/RB-LB; & Andrew Tovar (So)/QB/2 TD passes, the 1st going to Cameron Haney (Sr)/RB-CB and the 2nd to Aaron Moore, which sealed the victory for Coach Kevin Pearson.
