Garfield “Bulldogs” 79 L.A. Jordan “Bulldogs” 0 Recap: Garfield’s Head Coach Lorenzo Hernandez had this to say after his team’s resounding victory over his Eastern league oponent. “Last week it was a bad situation in which our starters were pulled at the end of the 1st quarter. L.A. Jordan’s “Bulldogs” showed great pride by showing up as it was their last game of the year. They didn’t need to show up and play, as this week, 11/7/14, was their “Bye” this week. But as a strong testament to their players and their team, they came out and competed with great pride and spirit nonetheless. This week in the “80th East L.A. Classic,” we face a hungry rival that will make us earn every yard. Roosevelt and their outstanding QB, Sammy Hernandez, are going to test our defense. Our offensive unit will have to be able to move the big boys that Roosevelt has. And they are huge.” Garfield comes into the Classic with an defeated Eastern League record of 5-0 and have already qualified for the Division 1, City Section Playoffs. It’s now just a question of what seed they will earn from the Committee. Next: Roosevelt, 11.7.14 @ELAC, 7:30 pm Kick-off in the 80th Annual East L.A. Classic LH/GHS-RC, Sr./ELASS.COM
South Gate “Rams” 62 Bell “Eagles” 7 Recap: South Gate Head Coach, Jose Casagran had these remarks after his Rams completely shut down the Bell “Eagles” in this Eastern league game. “The game with Bell was a lot of fun because it is such a tough rivalry. They played hard but are facing a very tough season. I’m sure they will bounce back next year. We are now focused on facing South East High School in our last game of the regular season. They are fast and well coached so it will be a big challenge for us.” Needless to say, the Rams will be looking to close out their Eastern League with a big showing offensively as they use their arsenal of weapons in Toro, Thompson, Washington, Findley, and Shaw on offense. On defense, look for Jonathan Estrada, Francisco Gallegos, and Antonio Olivares to limit the Jaguars’ offensive threats aimed at their unit. The winner of this game will certainly have the momentum earned with a victory, and should carry it over into the upcoming playoffs. Next: South East @ South East, 11.7/14, 7 pm. The Rams only need to travel a very short distance to reach the playing field and the campus of the Jaguars. JC/SGHS-RC, Sr./ELASS.COM
Cathedral “Phantoms” 36 St. Paul “Swordsmen” 13 Recap: After the game, Cathedral’s Head Coach, Kevin Pearson, spoke about his team’s big Angelus League victory. “We came out a little flat for the St. Paul game last week. But we recovered nicely in the second half and and won the game convincingly by a final socre of 36-13. The Swordsmen surprised us early when they scored on their first drive and chewed up about eight minutes of the first quarter. After that, we then responded with a score of our own on a TD pass from Andrew Tovar, followed by a two point conversion, to make it 8-7. After that, our offense got into gear, we repsonded to what we saw in their defense, and made the most of our opportunities. Our Players of the Game were: Running back, Jerry Martin, who had over 100 yards rushing and caught a touchdown pass. On defense, once again Noah Johnson couldn’t be stopped as he was a force to be reckoned with the entire game. And lastly, Erin Laura, who had nine receptions and was one of our busiest offensive players in the match-up.” Next: La Salle, @ La Salle, 11/7/14 @ 7 pm. This is the final Angeleus League game of the season. KP/CHS-RC, Sr./ELASS.COM
Lincoln “Tigers” 22 Franklin “Panthers” 15 Recap: Lincoln Head Coach, Albert “Woody” Carrillo made these comments after a hard-fought and tremendous win over Franklin. “It was a tough game, but a ‘must win’ for us to secure our Divisional Playoff spot. Our offense struggled at times, but our defense once again picked us up and was the deciding factor with two interceptions, two sacks, and 4 fumble recoveries. Safety, Albert Ramirez Jr., was one more time, our top defensive player with 10 tackles.” The time tested addage that “defense wins games” was once again proven by the Tigers’ combined defensive team effort all game long. For their remarkable team efforts, the Tigers will be rewarded with an extension of their season in the playoffs as they now prepare for their final match-up of the regular season in the Northern League and their long-awaited “Homecoming Game” when they take on the “Wolves” from Sotomayor High School on 11.7.14 at 7 pm. Marshall “Barristers” 40 Wilson “Mighty Mules” 6 Recap: The Mighty Mules Head Coach, Eddie Martinez, made these remarks after the loss to Marshall. “Unfortunately, we finished the regular season with a loss. Our season record of 3-7 overall and 2-4 in the Northern League was disapppointing. There were many good indicators of the way we played each and every game this season, that we are now more confident that next year’s team will come out and turn things around in a most positive way, returning us to our winning ways. In spite of our record, we still have an outside shot at a Division 3 playoff berth.” In summing up the season, Coach Martinez also added, “it has been a tough year but our players hung in there. Bright spots that shined each and every week were Senior LB/TE, Arthur Duarte, Jr., Running Back, Elijah Collins and JR/QB A.J. Wright.” The Mules have officially ended their season wth their Bye Week, but Coach Martinez and his team will now await the word of an invitation to compete in the playoffs when the L.A. City Section Office announces the Playoff tournament field on Saturday morning, November 8th. EM/WHS-RC, Sr./ELASS.COM
Roosevelt “Rough Riders” 38 Huntington Park “Spartans” 32 Recap: It was another “back and forth” game for the Rough Riders as they managed to hold on for a much-needed win and keep their playoff chances alive and well. It was all Riders in the first half as they jumped on the “Spartans” for a commanding halftime lead of 31-12. But in the second half, the tables were turned as the defensive unit, led by veteran Senior linebackers, Kevin Gomez and Cesar Ramirez rose to the occasions time and again and stopped the Spartans from eventually tying the game or winning it outright with a final score. Fortunately the clock ran out and the Riders sent their loving and supportive fans home with smiles on their faces. The key to this victory ultimately was that Coach Cid heavily relied on, and believed in his veteran offensive line, his running backs, and of course, his versatile QB, Sammy Hernandez to make the clutch plays in the most critical parts of the match-up. And deliver Hernandez did with 3 TD passes and 1 rushing TD to complete a very productive night in leading the Rough Riders to this crucial Eastern League win. agle Rock “Eagles” 69 Torres “Toros” 13 Recap: The Eagle Rock “Eagles” demonstrated their superiority over the visiting Toros once the ball was kicked off and the game was underway. As a result, they came away with a “blow-out” win, utilizing a variety of offensive weapons. The game was basically over by the end of the first quarter when the score read, Eagles 49 Toros 6. Head Coach Peter Cuevas and his team played, and fought to the best of their capabilities, but in the end, they were no match for a bigger, stronger, and more powerful Northern League opponent. The lone bright spot for the Toros on this 2014 Halloween Night was the play of Robert Castro who scored twice on runs of 72 and 2 yds. Next: Marshall @ Torres, 11.7.14, 7 pm RC, Sr./ELASS.COM
