The 2017 CIF/L.A. City Section’s Eastern League Champion, #2 South Gate, and its runner-up, #4 Garfield, took care of their playoff business by defeating the #7 Westchester Comets (45-21) and the #5 El Camino Real Conquistadores (36-7) respectively, in their Division 1 quarterfinal playoff match-ups last week, 11/17/17. Now it‘s on to the Semifinals this Friday, 11/24,17.
The Garfield Bulldogs will travel to the San Fernando Valley to take on the #1 San Fernando Tigers. They are currently riding a five game winning streak and have this match-up in their sights as number six. The Tigers (10-2) come in to this game very confident after their huge rout of the Arleta Mustangs, (54-0) while the South Gate Rams (9-3), who earned home team advantage for the playoffs up to this point, will once again play in front of their devoted fans to battle the #6 Dorsey Dons. And there you have the “Final Four” in the L.A. City Section’s Division-1 tournament.
We now give you the results of the other three East L.A. Sports Scene-covered teams that made it to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs. First, in Division-2, the #7 Roosevelt Rough Riders were defeated by the #2 Huntington Park Spartans in a rematch of their Eastern League match-up. The final score was Huntington Park 32, Roosevelt 9. We wish the Spartans the Best of luck as the third Eastern League team to make it to the semifinal round of the playoffs.
In the Division-3 match-ups, #5 Verdugo Hills outlasted #4 Torres by the score of 43-13. And our last team that fought valiantly until the final buzzer were the #6 Wilson HS Mules. The #3 Locke Saints defeated them at home by a final score of 26-14. To see all teams competing in Semi-Final games, please click here.
Big Congrats to all of the teams that made their season a most memorable one, especially for all of their Seniors. There is much optimism that Garfield and South Gate can create a rematch of their remarkable Eastern League game in which the Rams barely edged the Bulldogs by the score of 49-48. Let’s do all that we can to support both of our schools in their quest to win the Division 1 Championship! Rico Cabrera, Sr./Editor, EastLASportsScene.Com
