(Boyle Heights)—The much-anticipated 2018-19 season rivalry Boys and Girls varsity basketball games of the year, between the Mendez Jaguars and the Animo Oscar De La Hoya Boxers, were unexpectedly cancelled on the same day as regularly scheduled school sporting events . The result of this decision by De La Hoya Animo were official non-conference game forfeits.
The formal reason for the decision has not yet officially been made public, but will hopefully be given to the communities of both schools, their student bodies, administrators, coaches, and student-athletes.
We will do our best to provide a statement from the CIF/L.A. City Section Commissioner’s office and/or the top Administrative officials from both impacted schools.
Moving Forward….The forfeit win moved Mendez’s boys team overall record to (11-5), and sets up a huge Central League Home game match-up with the Roybal “Titans” on Wednesday, 1/30 at 4:00 pm. The Jaguars will come into the match-up with a (5-2) League record. Roybal currently posts a League leading and undefeated, (8-0) record. Both schools compete in the Section’s Division III.
Meanwhile, the Mendez Lady Jaguars with their non-conference forfeit victory moved their overall record to (10-7). Their Central Leaguerecord is (5-2), good enough for 2nd place behind undefeated Hollywood HS. On Wednesday, they will face the Roybal Lady Titans on the road in a very important League game. Tip-off is set for 4 pm.
