Note From The Editor:
The ELAC Women’
s Basketball program has now risen to the greatest heights in the history of its program. The “Lady Huskies” provided their student body, their fans, their families, and their very supportive circle of friends with a win “like no other” in the annals of the College’s sport. Last Saturday, they faced the Irvine Valley College “Lasers” in the 4th Round/“Elite Eight” of the State Playoff tournament and it was a simple fact in all post-season play that they faced, “Win or Go Home” and wait for next season.
However, the Bruce Turner coached Huskies were not believers in the Go Home part of the saying and proved it by playing with their accustomed forty minutes of team confidence, even after a slow first-half start had them playing catch-up basketball. But, by halftime, Coaches and players had made critical game adjustments and the team had played well enough to carry a 4 point lead into the locker room.
When it came time to start the Huskies’ team engine for the second half, the key was given to #12 Kyla Martin-Burnley (Etiwanda HS) and off they went. In showing their offensive dominance of the game, points came from everywhere, on regular baskets, fast-breaks, 3 point shots, and free throws. Kyla (who poured in 15 second-half points), led the scoring attack with an impressive game-high 24 points. Her highly skilled back-court partner, #4 Olivia Ochoa (Roosevelt HS) scored 12, ever-present power forward, #14 Jocelyn Diaz (Whittier HS), added 12, outstanding back-up center, #30 Abigail Vasquez (Wilson HS-LA) put in 15, and Head Coach Bruce Turner’s deep, talented bench stepped up and added their contributions to the “Biggest Win” ever, as the final score read, East Los Angeles College 75, Irvine Valley College 62.
Stay with us now and watch our “Play-By-Play” of history-in-the-making as the “Lady Huskies” are off to their first-ever California Community College Athletic Association’s “Final Four” Tournament and the right to play for the State Championship. Their first opponent will be Chabot College (29-3) from Hayward, CA. on Saturday, March 14th at 5 pm. Please help us to support our team by spreading the good news through your “likes and shares” about this fantastic accomplishment. Go Lady Huskies!!
