The Garfield HS Bulldogs returned to their home confines in Week #7 to host the Huntington Park Spartans for the 2017 Eastern League opener for both squads. The most important part of the season now unfolded with little or no room for losses, especially at home. With that total game and full season mindset, Bulldogs Head Coach Lorenzo Hernandez and his team knew that much was on the line.
Brief Game Summary: The game was tied 14-14 at halftime. In the 3rd quarter, the Bulldogs immediately opened their offensive arsenal with a consistently executed ground and air attack. This accounted for three third quarter TDs and two 4th quarter TDs. The stingy and aggressive Bulldog defense held the Spartans to just one TD in the 4th quarter. Coach Hernandez was also able to take advantage of the huge lead by inserting many of his reserves into the game for a good taste of much-needed game experience. On a rather historic game-note, Coach Hernandez inserted his senior, left-footed placekicker, #25 Jennifer Ibarra into the game in the 4th quarter for PAT purposes. Let the school record book show that she became the first female varsity football player to score a point as a Garfield student-athlete when she connected on her try after the final TD was scored with 5:17 remaining in the game. She attempted a total of two PATS but missed her first attempt when it sailed just wide. Congrats to Jennifer, her kicking coach, her Head Coach, and all of her teammates for supporting her entire career as a Garfield Bulldog.
