In our final regular season High School “Game of the Week” #11, we returned to the campus of the Garfield Bulldogs (3-1) as they hosted the Bell Eagles (2-2). It would be a crucial match-up for the Bulldogs since a possible sharing of the league title with South Gate and Huntington Park was riding on a victory. Each of these schools entered the last League game with identical (3-1) records. However, at the end of our Friday Night Lights game, South Gate would also prevail in victory, thus giving them the outright Eastern League Championship due to their 49-48 “Head-To-Head” tie breaking win over the Bulldogs on October 13th. Huntington Park was not in the running due to their loss to the Roosevelt Rough Riders.
Brief Game Summary: From the outset of the game, it was night of explosiveness for the Bulldogs as they opened up often and early against the Eagles. By the end of the first quarter the score was 29-7 in favor of the Bulldogs. Bell’s offense came to life in the first quarter when they surprisingly answered Garfield’s first TD with a 65 yd run by their QB. They managed to score again the second quarter, but that would end their offense for the night as the Bulldog defense continually shut down their opponent’s offense. The score at half was Bulldogs 36 – Eagles 14.
The second half was more of the first as Coach Hernandez was able to play many of his reserves while scoring another three TDs to finish the game with a final score of 56-14. Due to the thirty point scoring margin, the 4th quarter was played under the “Mercy Rule” (no stopping of the game clock). Thus, the stage was set for the L.A. City Section playoff committee to make its playoff selections. The Bulldogs have earned the #4 seed and a home game against #13 seed, Taft HS/Woodland Hills/West Valley League (1-4), this Thursday, 11/9. Special Note From the Editor: Instead of all playoff games being played this Friday, our Veterans Day Holiday Observance, the L.A. City Section has moved the game to Thursday, since school would not be in session. So, everyone, please check your schedules and duly note the big change. All games will kick-off at 7 pm.
