Note From The Editor: Attention All ELAC and Junior College Football Fans! Time to come along with us as we take you onto the practice field of the “Huskies” at Weingart Stadium as they prepare for the start of the 2015 season on Saturday, September 5th at 6 pm, when they host the Glendale College “Vaqueros.” During our Media Day session at this practice, you’ll see up-close footage plus a captivating photo gallery of the full squad, as we zero in on the offensive, defensive, and special teams units.
First year Head Coach, Eric Marty has been on the job now for nine months and he’s extremely excited and upbeat about the team’s prospects for this season. At the end of practice we took some time to speak with him about the comprehensive preparations that he has undertaken since taking control of the program last January. In addition, we had the oportunity to interview the following four players in this order: 1) Kevin Gomez, the Roosevelt High School Rough Rider alum who is competing for a linebacking spot; 2) Vicente Peña, the L.A. Wilson High School grad will compete for the kicking and place-kicking duties for the team; 3) Israel Lorenzo, the tower of power on the offensive line, and proud alumnus of Schurr High; and 4) Michael Ladino, the sophomore QB from Contreras High, who will be challenging for the coveted leadership spot on the team.
We’re looking forward to covering the “Huskies” and many of the former local prep standouts we’ve followed in the past. So glad to see that they’ve decided to play closer to home for this season and possibly the next. We’ve identified 16 of these local players and are happy to announce that the 2015 roster features the school/player(s) breakdown in the following manner: Garfield Bulldogs: Larry Ravelo, Giovanni Leon, Jorge Felix, and Joshua Chavez; Roosevelt Rough Riders: Kevin Gomez, Joseph Martinez, Peter Hernandez, and Mario Ramirez; L.A. Wilson Mules: Vicente Peña, Kevin Cabot, Daniel Price, and Aaron Bartosek; Salesian Mustangs: Jason Ordaz and Arnie Robles; Torres Toros: Johnny Gonzalez; Lincoln Tigers: Dakota Ridgeway.
On a final note, we’ll also list other well-recognized Southland schools that Coach Marty and his Coaching Staff made those key recruiting stops to in order to build his program from the ground up. Here is a partial list: Schurr, Montebello, Cantwell-Sacred Heart, Mark Kepple, St. Paul, Crenshaw, Dorsey, Eagle Rock, Franklin, Santee, Contreras, Downey, San Gabriel, Whittier, and El Rancho just to name a few. Go Huskies!!
We encourage all of our followers to come out and support the “Huskies” this season and cheer them on at Weingart Stadium, one of the premier football venues in the entire country. Let’s support the positive theme of “Our College-Our Community!” Rico Cabrera, Sr./Editor, EastLASportScene.Com
