Note From The Editor: The time has come once more for the annual sports and community event of the year, “The East L.A. Classic,” — the Roosevelt “Rough Riders” vs. the Garfield “Bulldogs.” It’s the biggest, and the most “one-of-a-kind” high school football rivalry game in the USA and it certainly makes our community proud of that fact and the strong tradition it has created by generations of Familias del Este De Los Angeles. For 2015, it all comes together this Friday, October 30that East L.A. College’s famed, Weingart Stadium, where a crowd of 18,000+ is expected to cheer their favorite school on to victory in this 81st edition of “The Classic.” This posting is a photojournalistic look at the 10/28/15 press conference and a brief backgrounder of the game. Game Background Note: For the fifth consecutive year, from 2010 to 2104, the “Classic” trophy remains a fixture in the trophycase on the campus of Garfield High School. Head Coach Javier Cid will lead his Roosevelt “Rough Riders” into battle. He is set to bring their best game effort of the season to the field in high hopes of upsetting the dynasty that his opponent, Garfield “Bulldog” Head Coach, Lorenzo Hernandez, has created over the last decade.
A win for the Riders could secure them a post-season trip to the L.A. City Schools/Division 1 tournament. A loss is not an option for them. On the other hand, the Bulldogs are right where they need to be, on the brink of clinching yet another Eastern League Championship, as well as earning themsleves a top seed in the City Section’s playoffs.
Team Records Comparisons:Garfield/Overall 6-2/Eastern League/4-0; Roosevelt/Overall 4-4/Eastern League/2-2
Reminders:The varsity game kicks-off at 7:30 pm while the JV game starts at 4 pm. Remember, this is a dual Homecoming Game scenario and both teams will send out their best Marching Bands, Flag, and Drill teams at halftime. If you’ve never been to a “Classic,” then now’s a great time to start your annual support of this fantastic East Los Angeles community event.
